The Five Continents.

So, this is not some sort of AI generated photo, but it is a real existing building.

If you are ever in the city of Antwerp, be sure not to miss ‘The Five Continents’ an Art-Deco building colloquially known as ‘the boat house’ or ‘the little boat’ for it’s facade which has a balcony in the form of a ship.

Built in 1901 to the plans of architect Frans Smet-Verhas and commissioned by the boat builder Petrus Roeis, it was sold 2 years ago for funny money (a 2 and 6 zero’s) to a lawyer firm.

The thing to keep in mind about Large Language Models (LLMs, what people refer to as AI, currently) is even though human knowledge in the form of language is fed into them for their training, they are only storing statistical models of language, not the actual human knowledge. Their responses are constructed from statistical analysis of context of prior language used.

Any appearance of knowledge is pure coincidence. Even on the most “advanced” models.

Language is how we convey knowledge, not the knowledge itself. This is why a language model can never actually know anything.

And this is why they’re so easy to manipulate into conveying objectively false information, in some cases, maliciously so. ChatGPT and all the other big vendors do manipulate their models, and yes, in part, with malice.

Going through my photos from last October, I wondered if I could get this last long exposure of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) over the Grand Canyon to popout of the horizonal haze by doing a little dodging and burning. The star trails are a little disappointing. I should have bumped up the ISO a bit, but I thought I wouldn't be using this photo given the comet was so buried in the haze. #NotAI

A tiny Maltese pup, his bright button eyes riveted on our every move, seems to be anticipating our plans for the day. Will it be a nice walkie on a soft spring morning then breakfast and some play? Or will Mom or Dad pull out the going-away clothes and shoes and leave him alone? Sometimes it seems like he knows what I've got on my schedule before I do! Healthy radium cigarettes

This one was inspired by a tweet I saw a few years ago, something along the lines of “machine learning is the radium salts of the twenty-first century”. This joke is more relevant than ever; corporations are trying to squeeze “AI” into every role imaginable, no matter that it’s mostly useless and often harmful.
