Whenever I have new #pottery ready, I send an email to my subscribers. It’s a way for me to communicate with people who want to buy my work and it’s also a place to express myself in more than 500 characters since I like to write. Being a potter means drawing from a vocabulary of tried-and-true forms: mugs, teapots, bowls, pitchers, etc. However, these archetypal forms have European & Asian origins.

I thought it would be interesting to everyone & affirming to other Black ceramicists to reference #African forms in contemporary tableware. The combining of European, Asian and African ceramics traditions goes back to mid-20th century, but that history is omitted from US #ceramic education. See #alttext for details. #pottery

A small jug with a spout, made to reference the iconic form of Nupe storage vessels from Nigeria. The jug is spherical and voluminous at the bottom, narrow at the neck and flares out into a cup shape at the top. It is heavily decorated with carved geometric patterns, painted with orange clay slip from Tennessee, variegated brown clay slip from Lake Ontario and bright chartreuse green glazed accents.
A large storage vessels from the Nupe culture of Nigeria, 20th century. It is dark brown and mostly unglazed except for a few bands of shiny, vitrified slip that have flaked off over the years. It has the same proportions referenced in the piece Osa made, with similar carved geometric patterning. This vessel however does not include a spout and is too large to lift and pour. It was probably mainly used for storage of liquids, grains, seeds, etc.

I was building my portfolio last night and came across this photo of a piece from my 1st solo show in 2022. As I've explained before, I can't get this glaze to work anymore so I won't be making pieces like this anytime soon.

The pitcher & basin set resembles Botticelli’s #Venus standing in a clam shell. However, the intention of this piece was simply to honor #water as a ritual element with spiritual significance, not to reference the painting.

Hello World! This is the brand new Fediverse account of Minnesota Measurement Instruments. We are a small manufacturer of thermocouple temperature sensors.
We make high temperature Type K sensors that are used in #pottery #kilns . We believe in the right to repair and make specialty sensors for old and out of production kilns & ovens
We also supply sensors for science to everybody from vaccine manufacturers, universities, solar and electric car manufacturers to space agencies.

I am a ceramic artist who enjoys making little ceramic critters. I'm most inspired by forest animals, but I love pretty much all kinds of animals. If I had all the money in the world, I would open a wildlife sanctuary in the woods. But right now I'm content to create my own little menagerie of cute things. Working on a pair of #compost crocks (among other things) to hopefully be fired by the end of the month. We’ve outgrown our old one so one of these will be the replacement. They each hold somewhere around a gallon/4L. The double handles make them easy to carry & dump, and the lids fit snuggly. They’re sturdy pieces of functional ware, which also serve as decorative objects when not in use. I’m excited to see them glazed. #beautility #functionalpottery #gardening #permaculture #ceramics #pottery
