If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area and you’re interested in the future of news, you might be interested in an event @SFPublicPress is hosting. On March 13, there’ll be a special screening of “Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink,” a documentary by Academy Award-nominee Rick Goldsmith, about hedge fund Alden Global Capital, which has been gutting local papers across America.

San Francisco Public Press · FILM: ‘Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink’Journalists go toe-to-toe with the hedge-fund owners of local newspapers in a battle to save and rebuild local journalism in America.

I’m always deeply suspicious of #SanFrancisco news stories where companies claim that the city let “the meth addicts and homeless take over”, and that’s why they’re closing.

The Market claimed they went from $60k/day in income in 2019 to $2,300/day today, and it’s because of dwindling foot traffic, remote work (of course) and homeless people and drug addicts.

I simply don’t buy it. A 97% drop in your income can’t simply be blamed on druggies and remote workers. I bet the story is more complex than that, and it’s a shame that SFGate took them at their word.

This narrative is too often repeated and has become suspiciously convenient. #sfba

📢 Do you live in the San Francisco Bay Area? Or know people who do?

Please sign up with Bay Resistance, a network of local civil society and labor groups using a single unified alert network.

If you remember the thousands of people who streamed to SFO in the wake of the Muslim Ban in 2017, that was partly in response to one of their alerts.

I've been a Bay Resistance rep in the past, and have tremendous trust in their good judgment.

@maleve KPFA and an environmental website were saying people were getting blisters in their faces, as well as the symptoms listed above. But most media has been mute on this, only saying tests show below harmful levels. It opened in 2023 as the biggest battery storage facility and this is the 4th incident already. Many crops are grown nearby, subject to fallout. #sfba

Hello #SFBA! Folks. My friends at @Flipboard (where I worked for a decade!) are up to something new, and they want to give our community priority access to @surf, a new way to browse the social web and build custom feeds for all your interests. I have no financial interest in this - I just love their apps and ethos.

Another form of inhumane #homeless #unhoused sweep in #SanJose.

The city is towing away (to where?) 960 lived-in vehicles, but are only “planning” to open a safe-parking lot for 85 vehicles. Where do the rest go, Mayor Mahan? Do they just disappear?

The unhoused crisis in the #sfba is not caused by encampments or lived-in vehicles; they are merely the symptoms of the problem. Show me action that deals with the housing affordability crisis that’s at the heart of this problem.

There are more than a few lived-in RVs around my neighborhood. Do I want them removed? Hell no, unless you’re also giving them a place to live. Those people are my neighbors.

“San Jose is towing oversized vehicles from these 30 locations”
