Old Trafford (the stadium) always struggled to build more because the trains ran alongside the place. And then the other side of the train track, none of the residents would sell their place.

I guess Manchester United has finally bought all the houses around the stadium and convinced the local government to shut off the train line to Liverpool whilst they redevelop the entire area.

Some big big money being thrown around here.

Paris ring road's car-sharing lane becomes active.

During rush hour, the leftmost traffic lane will be reserved for vehicles carrying 'at least two passengers,' public transport, taxis, emergency vehicles and people with reduced mobility.

@airshipper
> we don’t have a big enough population to afford to maintain so many kms of safe state highways

Highways that seem to need constant patching. Unlike well-built rails.

Highways made of bitumen. Which is a byproduct of oil refining. As we learned when there was that fuss about the bitumen from Marsden Point being better than the imported stuff.

So like fossil fuels, roads aren't actually sustainable. Something we need to transition away from.

In 1991, the publicly-owned InterCity bus network in Aotearoa was sold to a consortium of investor-owned coach companies. The rationale was that along with "deregulation" - reforms that made regulations more favourable to investor-owned operations - this would help to create a thriving competitive market for long distance coach services. Prices would go down, service quality would go up, queue the ticker tape parade.

#Infrastructure in British #India:
"Natural drainage of Bengal was disturbed due to construction of a network of #railway embankments resulting in formation of poorly drained “compartments” in different areas of Bengal. This led to excessive silting, damaged crop production, increased chance of flooding and created stagnant water pockets that were apt for water-borne diseases like cholera and malaria."
