American white pelicans, watercolor.

One of the largest North American birds, the American White Pelican is majestic in the air. The birds soar with incredible steadiness on broad, white-and-black wings. Their large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look. On the water they dip their pouched bills to scoop up fish, or tip-up like an oversized dabbling duck. Sometimes, groups of pelicans work together to herd fish into the shallows for easy feeding. Look for these elegant birds on inland lakes in summer and near coastlines in winter.

Ducks take flight over a blue-gray lake reflecting the last light of day watercolor. Trees shrouded in fog and a few dimly lighted houses can be seen in the distance as two ducks take flight after an evening repast. #WaterfallWednesday

I've visited a lot of waterfalls in my time as a photographer, and while my technique has evolved with experience and time, this image from 2007 has remained one of my favorites. I've gone back to this location multiple times to photograph this exact image, but this one always wins out.

Getting to this position in the creek is not for the faint of heart-- I usually put my camera strap in my teeth to hold it above the water as my feet slip over mossy, slick rocks until I get to a boulder further downstream. When I'm done taking exposures I am typically soaked head to toe.
Worth it. Every single time.

A long exposure waterfall scene in a stream. Beginning from the lower left hand corner of the image, four mossy boulders build an upward diagonal line that draws the eye to water frothing over rocky cascades. Vibrant green moss decorate the rocks further upstream, and water rushes towards the camera in curtains of white water. At the upper quarter of the image a forested hillside slopes down towards the stream.

Was at the beach early one morning for sunrise and spotted this early bird trying to catch that worm … or fish. It was a beautiful day for fishing on the Gulf waters and I hope he was lucky enough to have something to take home for dinner.
